
30 students ages 9-17 have made it to the International Championship of World Robot Olympiad 2018 to be held at Thailand on 16-18 November 2018. They will represent India among student participants and delegates from 60 other countries at this global STEM & Robotics program. Aligned to this year’s theme ‘Food Matters’ students will be showcase their creative solutions for areas related to growth, logistics & consumption of food. One of such solutions from Indian students focuses on an automatic system that uses natural resources like banana leaves, teak leaves etc. to develop efficient and economic alternatives to plastic, newspaper, aluminum foil for temporary food storage and parcel. The impact of such a system is manifold benefiting human beings and nature alike.
Programs like World Robot Olympiad India (WRO India) that entice students’ involvement in learning by doing process with logical utilization of technology and infuse STEM as well as life skills are becoming integral part of education system. These are very much essential to nurture students’ all-round capabilities to be future skills ready. As with an impact of globalization, Industry 4.0 & other forces, it is expected that more than 37% of Indian workforce should face jobs/careers that require radically different skill sets (Future of Skills and Jobs in India, FICCI and NASSCOM).
WRO India program is organized by India STEM Foundation; a Civil Society Organization engaged in implementing programs that encourage hands-on use of technology in education while reinforcing STEM skills & nurturing life skills among students at an early age. It is the 15th edition for WRO India and was held regionally across 12 different cities during August 2018 and then concluded with a Grand National Championship at Ahmedabad on 15-16 September 2018. With participation of about 1000 students from different parts of India, the program came across as celebration of innovation and creativity. The guests from supporting partners like NTPC Ltd., Hindustan International Schools (Chennai), Adani Wilmar Ltd., were awe-inspired by the excitement and involvement of students at the program.
